Honorary Doctorates
Universidad Europea de Madrid grants Honorary Doctorates to those professionals with extraordinary abilities whose personal and professional careers are recognized nationally and internationally in the fields of science, technology, culture, education, research, or any of the professional areas that bring an added value to our society.
In this way, UEM recognizes the contributions of our Honorary Doctors and proposes them as models to be followed by our students and teaching staff.

Honorary Doctorate conferred on Professor Per-Ingvar Brånemark
In 2003 Universidad Europea de Madrid held its first Honorary Doctorate ceremony. The School of Health Sciences at Universidad Europea de Madrid granted an Honorary Doctorate to the Swedish bioengineer Per-Ingvar Brånemak, the father of osseointegration.

Honorary Doctorate conferred on Architect, Miguel Fisac
In 2004, during a very moving ceremony, Universidad Europea de Madrid granted an Honorary Doctorate to the architect Miguel Fisac, for his contribution to Spanish Architecture in the 20th Century.

Honorary Doctorate conferred on Luis Bassat
In 2005, Luis Bassat, president of the Bassat Ogilvy Iberia Group, received an Honorary Doctorate from the School of Communication and Humanities at Universidad Europea de Madrid.

Honorary Doctorate conferred on Writer, Mario Vargas Llosa
In 2006, the writer Mario Vargas Llosa was granted an Honorary Doctorate by the School of Communication and Humanities at Universidad Europea de Madrid, for his significant contribution to literary creation in the Spanish Language and for his personal commitment to society in offering a holistic vision of the influence of culture on the phases of human life.

In January 2007, Antonio Garrigues Walker received an Honorary Doctorate from the School of Business and Law at Universidad Europea de Madrid, for his contribution to the development and internationalization of Social and Legal Sciences, and for his commitment to society in establishing ethics as a precursor to Law.

Honorary Doctorates conferred on Valentín Fuster, Joan Rodés and Pedro Alonso
In January 2008, in the presence of Their Royal Highnesses the Prince and Princess of Asturias, the School of Health Sciences awarded Honorary Doctorates to Valentín Fuster for his contribution to the development of cardiovascular medicine, which has had a global impact on the improvement of the treatment of patients with cardiac disorders; Joan Rodés, for his personal and professional career, and for his important international contribution to Hepatological research; Pedro Alonso, for his merits at an international level in the field of Epidemiology, and in particular, for his contribution to the advancement in research in finding a vaccine against Malaria.

In February 2009 Juan Antonio Samaranch received an Honorary Doctorate from the School of Sports Science at Universidad Europea de Madrid, for his contribution to the transmission of the values of sport in general and of the Olympic spirit, and in particular, for the improvement in education for all and his contribution to the advancement of society.

In May 2010, to mark the International Year for the Rapprochement of Cultures, various Universities from the Laureate International Universities Network, conferred the degree of Doctor Honoris Causa on His Excellency Mr. Nelson Mandela for his contribution to freedom, democracy, tolerance and social progress in the world.

Honorary Doctorate conferred on Shirin Ebadi
In June 23, 2010, the Academic Board of Universidad Europea de Madrid on recommendation of the School of Social Sciences, does unanimously agree to confer the degree of Doctor Honoris Causa on Her Excellency Shirin Ebadi, 2003 Nobel Peace Prize, in recognition of her contribution and support for human rights and her struggle for freedom and justice.

Honorary Doctorate conferred on Lech Wałęsa
On January 28, 2011 Universidad Europea de Madrid conferred an honorary doctorate on His Excellency Lech Wałęsa, 1983 Nobel Peace Prize laureate, Poland's first democratic president following the fall of communism and co-founder of “Solidarity,” the first independent trade union in the former Soviet bloc, in recognition of his contribution to freedom, democracy and dialogue to achieve social progress in the world.
