An Interview with Miguel Carmelo

  • What is Laureate International Universities?
  • Laureate International Universities is an international network of Higher Education institutions founded in 1998 in the United States. It is currently made up of more than 58 institutions spanning 28 countries, with more than 100 campuses and over 675,000 students worldwide.

The Laureate Network was created with the objective of making higher education more accessible to a greater number of students, regardless of their home country, by educating individuals who then share their knowledge and contribute to the development and growth of communities.

  • What is its mission?
  • Its primary mission is to satisfy the growing demand for higher education worldwide by providing students with the tools needed to reach their professional and personal goals. Students are provided a wide range of higher education programs focused on the professional world and its demands.

Its vision as an international network is to facilitate access to all levels of Higher Education under one common denominator: educating individuals by providing them the theoretical context as well as practical knowledge demanded by today's highly competitive global marketplace.

  • What aspects set Laureate apart?
  • The students in our network follow the Laureate philosophy, which is guided by our commitment to create academic programs that foster:

    • Internationality, offering bilingual, study abroad and Dual Degree programs as well as sharing curricula across institutions and also offering access to their faculty from other countries.
    • Technological innovation, as a subject itself, as well as a means to learn and discover.
    • Career orientation, focused on conveying the knowledge and skills needed for the job market.
    • Focus on outcomes, reflecting the professional success achieved by Laureate students.

In total, the institutions in our network offer more than 130 higher education programs in the areas of health, hotel management, business, law, education, architecture, engineering and information technology. Together, all the fields needed to achieve success in today’s global society.

  • What does Laureate bring to its students and society?
  • In addition to its distinguishing characteristics: internationality, innovation, career orientation and focus on outcomes, the success of the network’s methodology can be measured by the students’ contribution to their environment. When our students succeed, countries prosper and societies benefit.

Multiculturalism, respect for other belief systems and lifestyles and global connection are key to Laureate's development as an international network. An essential part of the Laureate philosophy is respecting the history, culture and ways of life in the communities where it operates, thus enriching every Laureate student at both a personal and global level.

Students are not the only ones who benefit; Laureate also offers its professors global initiative scholarships. This initiative - Richard W. Riley Scholarships - created by Laureate and the Clinton Global Initiative, grants more than 1,000 scholarships to professors around the world. We know that the success of our students does not depend on them alone, but also on the impact professors have on them and on the development of society. A highly qualified faculty allows us to be agents for positive change and thus make communities stronger.

Every Laureate institution has its own academic advisory board certified by the academic and professional experience of its members in order to guarantee a high level of academic quality for all Laureate International Universities students.

Moreover, the network has close relationships with a wide range of world leaders from every field who believe in the Laureate philosophy and collaborate by opening the doors of their institutions to Laureate students, thus promoting international mobility.
