We are the first environmental campus in Spain
The Universidad Europea de Madrid now has the distinction of being the first Environmental Campus in Spain. This achievement has been made possible thanks to the collaboration of students, professors and employees of the university.
We must all play our part so that we may continue to serve as an example for those around us through simple, everyday gestures that are so important to our environment.
Disposing of cigarette butts in the waste bins is one of those simple gestures that help keep our campus clean and protect nature at the same time because cigarette filters are more dangerous to the environment than you might think. They are made from cellulose acetate, a non-biodegradable material, and can stay in the environment for decades. Cigarette butts also contain thousands of chemical compounds that pollute the environment with toxic chemicals. The consequences can be devastating:
• Cigarette butts are transported by wind and rain into rivers, where the toxic chemicals found in the filters threaten water quality and many types of aquatic fauna.
• Furthermore, cigarette butts have been found in the stomachs of young birds, turtles and other marine animals, some of which are in danger of extinction.
If you do not want to form part of this pollution chain, help keep our Campus clean. What may seem to be a small effort on your behalf will have an enormous effect on everyone.
