“The School of Engineering, Universidad Europea de Madrid is proud to feature, from among its professors, Dr. Carlos Blanco, Associate Professor of the department of Electronics and Communications. Dr. Blanco spent part of his career as a professional scientist working together with the Nobel Prize Winner in Physics for 2009, Dr. C.K. Kao. Dr. Blanco worked with Dr. Kao in the 1970s when Dr. Kao led the research team in fiber optics for laboratories of STL (Standard Telecommunication Laboratories) of the British company STC (Standard Telephone & Cables) a European subsidiary of the North American ITT (International Telephone & Telegraph).

Later, in the 1980s, Dr. Kao called on Dr. Blanco to join his research team in the U.S. that had been put together by ITT. This was known as the EOPD (Electro Optical Products Division) in Roanoke, Virginia and it was established as the strategic hub for research on optical communications for ITT.

Dr. Blanco joined the team to head up research relative to packaging technology for high performance single-mode fiber. During his time in Virginia Dr. Blanco and Dr. Kao shared their efforts equally between the Virginia Polytechnic Institute and the State University (Virginia Tech). Dr. Blanco was named an Associate Professor at Virginia Tech. Dr. Kao and Dr. Blanco published an article together that summarized all of the work they had completed for the EOPD and for Virginia Tech. Subsequently Dr. Blanco published a book that covered all of his research in detail.
