Universidad Europea de Madrid

Four students from Universidad Europea de Madrid have become prize-winners at the National Awards for Excellence in University Academic Performance. The objective of these Awards, to be presented tomorrow in Madrid by the Minister for Education, Ángel Gabilondo, is to honor those students who have showed the most brilliance in their university studies which were completed during the 2007-2008 academic year.

Following the decision of the General Secretariat for Universities, published at the beginning of the month, Universidad Europea de Madrid has received three awards for the Department of Health Sciences and a Special Mention for the Department of Science.

Heidy Marrero Vila and Dolores Fernández Kuznezova were the winners of the First and Second Prizes respectively for the Bachelor’s Degree in Dentistry; while Diego Sierra Muñoz from the Department of Health Sciences received Third Prize for the Bachelor’s Degree in Nursing. In the Department of Science, Luis Miguel Hernández Suárez received a Special Mention for the Bachelor’s Degree in Optometry at Universidad Europea de Madrid.

These awards make Universidad Europea de Madrid the private higher education institution in the Autonomous Community of Madrid with the most prize-winning students, and the second private university in the whole of Spain, behind the Universidad de Navarra. Counting only those awards received by Madrid-based students at public and private universities, Universidad Europea de Madrid occupies fourth place, with only the Universidad Complutense, the Universidad Autónoma and the Universidad Politécnica de Madrid receiving more.

In the words of Águeda Benito, Rector of Universidad Europea de Madrid: “For a University like ours, that firmly stands behind a quality education which is focused on the interests of the student and on today’s social and professional world, it is a matter of enormous pride that these National Awards for Excellence in University Academic Performance highlight the work of four of our students”.

In all, the National Awards for Excellence in University Academic Performance award 296 prizes amounting to a total of 569,850 Euros, which are presented following the application of the Ministry of Education budget expenses. Among the awards are 71 first prizes of 3,300 Euros each, 71 second prizes amounting to 2,650 Euros each and 67 third prizes of 2,200 Euros each, as well as 87 Special Mentions, which have a purely academic value.

Universidad Europea de Madrid is a member of the Laureate International Universities Network, leader in Higher Education, with nearly 600,000 students in 50 institutions spanning 21 countries. It currently has more than 12,500 students, enrolled in seven Schools and four Graduate Centers. The University’s philosophy is based on three fundamental values: an international perspective, a strong professional approach and a commitment to 21st Century academic quality, which have led to UEM becoming the leader in building the framework of the European Higher Education Area in Spain.

This is the first university in the world to have received the quality certification Qualicert and the first Spanish university to achieve the ISO 14001 Standard for its Villaviciosa de Odón campus. It has also received other recognitions, such as EFQM 200+ for its management system and EFQM 300+ for the management of its library service.
