A Universidad Europea de Madrid professor wins a Red Seguridad [Security Network] award

Universidad Europea de Madrid

Maite Villalba, PhD in Computer Engineering, has achieved recognition from her sector which is particularly significant as it is the first time that these awards have been given for a doctoral dissertation.

Maite Villalba, Doctor at the Department of Information Systems and Automation at Universidad Europea de Madrid, was a winner in the latest edition of the IT Security Trophies for the best research undertaken on Computer Security, an award organized every year by the specialist journal Red Seguridad, [Security Network]. This new recognition from the sector, awarded for her research applied to Software Engineering in Information Technology Security, is particularly significant as this is the first time that these awards have been given for a doctoral dissertation. This project was chosen by a committee of experts that make up the jury from the journal Red Seguridad, who, as a result of their knowledge and independent criteria, selected the best entries from among the 70 candidates put forward in 2011.

Professor Villalba presented a research project based on a new model that measures the quality of the computer security programs that protect the user from possible Network threats, such as antivirus or firewalls. Assessed by more than 200 sector professionals and with more than 100 businesses taking part, the model has been applied to the product evaluation from different manufacturers including Microsoft (the ISA and IAG firewalls), SonicWall (NSA 4500) and Realsec (Criptosec 2048).

The assessment reports for this project were published in the specialist journal e.Security and the results obtained during the study were disseminated via the Ministry of Industry, Tourism and Commerce. The numerous mentions of this project at congresses, in high-impact research journals, in a chapter in a book published by Springer-Verlag (Factors with negative influence on software testing practice in Spain: a survey), in a book recently published for EAE by LAP LAMBERT Academic Publishing GmbH & Co. KG (software quality models) and the extraordinary PhD award for the best dissertation defense for that area of knowledge in 2009, all add to the recognitions achieved by this School of Engineering professor at Universidad Europea de Madrid.
