Technology-Based Entrepreneurship (TBE)
Technology-Based Businesses, also called "Spin-offs", or "Start-ups" in the USA, are a business initiative put forward by one or several members of the University community and undertaken with the idea in mind to commercially benefit from the knowledge acquired from research performed by said members at the University.
These business initiatives are formed when either the founder is a member of the University (professor, researcher, PAS) or when they are based on information generated and/or technology created by, and property of, the University.
The key characteristics of this type of initiative include:
- Participation by members of the University community
- Process of technology transfer: results of which are transmitted by the University
- Strong R&D component: The end result of research activity
- Strong economic potential.
Research Support Services, or OTRI (Oficina de Transferencia de Resultados de Investigación), coordinates the guidance and participation provided by UEM in Uniemprendia, a grouping of Universities in a national program for the promotion of Technology-Based Businesses, and actively collaborates with the Office of Technology-Based Enterprises in the Autonomous Region of Madrid (madri+d)
