Periodontics is one of disciplines within the field of dentistry subject to the most advancement over the last two decades. It is no surprise that two out of four of the most influential dentistry journals are exclusively dedicated to periodontics. These advances are of particular interest in areas such as:
- The ethiopathogenesis of periodontitis, specifically in the fields of microbiology, immunology and genetics.
- Relationships with cardiovascular pathologies.
- Periodontal regeneration procedures.
- Periodontal plastic surgery techniques so important in aesthetic treatments.
- Surgical procedures needed to create soft and hard tissue that guarantees compliance with the successful criteria for implant treatments.
The cotinuous evolution of periodontics demands training that, apart from having a sound theoretical basis, requires a hands-on approach that is sufficiently extensive as to be able to perfect numerous, occasionally complex surgical procedures in the fields of both periodontics and implantology.
In addition to appropriate training in the field of research, clinical sessions and bibliographic review complete the students’ education, equipping them to develop their careers as periodontists in the clinical, academic and research fields.
The major specialized skills acquired by the student during the course of this Master’s Degree are as follows:
- Ability to assess the periodontium, establishing a diagnosis, prognosis and a periodontal treatment plan.
- Knowledge of the etiology of periodontal illness, in educating patients regarding the etiology of periodontal illness as well as motivation so that they are able to take on responsibilities in relation to their periodontal health.
- Knowledge of all aspects of clinical medicine and surgery within periodontics.
- Possess an understanding of all the possible relationships between oral and systematic illnesses and be able to handle all the periodontal problems of medically compromised patients.
- Competence in the foundations of non-surgical periodontal therapy and in carrying out periodontal instrumentation techniques both supragingival and subgingival.
- Ability to carry out all periodontal surgical techniques including the most complex.
- Ability to assess the outcome of periodontal and implantological treatment and in establishing and supervising a maintenance program, including the assessment of risk factors.
- Ability to establish a diagnosis, case selection, treatment plan and the surgical procedures to successfully position and maintain dental implants.
- Ability to plan and carry out bone and soft tissue regeneration treatments required by patients that are going to be rehabilitated with dental implants.
- Ability to diagnose and handle peri-implant injuries and other complications associated with dental implants.
- Knowledge of relationships with other specialties such as occlusion (selective drilling, temporomandibular dysfunction), prosthesis (fixed and removable), implant prosthesis, and orthodontics.
- Ability to assess scientific literature and handle bibliographic databases.
- Ability to formulate appropriate questions and hypotheses relating to research, planning of an experimental design and communication of a research project.
